For my 16th solo album, I decided to do something very different! It had always been an (admittedly strange) dream of mine to record an entire album in one evening in a sleazy hotel room...

I found myself in East London to discuss business with a potential client, and whilst there I decided to kill two birds with one stone and make my little crazy dream a reality.

Barking’s Travelodge didn’t disappoint! So sleazy was the room that the manager offered me a full refund (without me even asking or complaining!) Noise outside, paper thin walls, mould, stains, dodgy lighting, everything I had hoped for in my romantically twisted vision.

Armed with acoustic guitar, harmonica, shaker and spoons, I set up the 16-track recorder, microphone and stand (all of which I had lugged across London on the Tube during rush hour - perhaps the greatest madness of the entire project!) and even utilised such things as the hotel mug and teaspoon as percussion.

I started recording the album straight away, beginning with the loudest ones (before any potential neighbouring guests settled in for the night!) and ended up with the quieter ones (that I’m sure were still audible through the ridiculously non-soundproofed walls). But, for whatever reason, I got away with it.

There is as much work and multi-tracking on this album as there was on my previous record-breaking attempt ’24 HOURS’. I’ve achieved the same again in a fraction of the time. A mere 5 hours in fact! I like to work fast, yet I’m still a little unsure as to how I acheived this one single-handedly so quickly?! I’m rather proud of myself though. Next time, I’ll get it down to 90 minutes.
