The 7th solo album...

Before the age of digital recording technology and the advent of burning your own CDs, us musicians had to record our songs on analogue equipment and mix them down to cassette tapes. Ah, happy memories of those days!

And back then, I wrote more songs than I knew what to do with. I must have been living on some kind of creative portal, because these tunes and lyrics flowed through me at an incredible rate.
And so I recorded them as I wrote them. I didn’t spend long on the arrangements, as there wasn’t the time – because the next song was always desperately waiting to be written!

I recorded about a dozen solo albums, often onto 90 minute cassettes, and filling every inch of them with songs.
But because of the inferior sound quality, the lack of proper arrangements, and the fact that I sift through this back catalogue to choose which ones to re-record digitally, I don’t include these albums on my musical CV. Maybe I should?!

One of my most popular tape albums was ‘Third Dimensional Living’. It was also one of my personal favourites. And as I hadn’t previously picked too many songs off it to re-record, I decided to do the whole album again (well, 20 of the original 27 songs anyway). But this time on a digital multitrack recorder, and spending more time on creating more interesting arrangements.

This album took me a very long 4 YEARS to complete!!!
Although to be fair, in between starting and finishing it, I also recorded 3 other solo albums and 5 collaborative albums. It was a very creative time, and I kept putting ‘3-D LIVING’ on the backburner. I’d like to think it was worth the wait though, and I’ve hopefully captured the spirit of my original tape album.

This time, I also enlisted a number of guest stars; my talented fellow y’Strel’s Band bandmates John Bullock, Helen Coombs & Debs Wakefield, my dear friends Jonny Camilleri (who originally inspired me to write these very songs) and Craig Houchen, the wonderful Holly Thea, and the amazing writer/actor/performance poet John Barclay. All of whom add their own delicious flavours to this eclectic mix…
